The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, in association with Forensic Alumni Association Roshni Mangaluru (FAARM) had organized its Seventh lecture as part of the “Series of Guest Lectures by Alumni” on the topic ‘Decoding the Mind: Technique of Brain Electric Oscillation Signature’ for the second year students of Criminology and Forensic Science specializing in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice on 19 October 2024 in the PG Department of Criminology and Forensic Science via Google Meet. The session aimed to introduce participants to this advanced forensic technique, used in the examination of neurocognitive processes such as memory and cognition, which are critical in criminal investigations.

The resource person for the session was Ms. Swapna Gowri C S, Assistant Professor at the Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, Acharya Institute of Graduate Studies, Bengaluru. The session commenced with an introduction and welcome by Ms. Fathima Farasath, second-year MSc CFS student. Ms. Swapna began the session by providing an introduction to BEOS, explaining its background and the role it plays in contemporary forensic investigations. Moving forward, she outlined the detailed procedure and operating mechanism of BEOS, discussing how brain electrical oscillations are captured and analyzed. Ms. Swapna emphasized the need for the right conditions to ensure accurate results and spoke on the objectives and advantages of the technique, such as its non-invasive nature and its ability to provide insights into the cognitive processes of a suspect without direct questioning. A critical analysis of BEOS was presented, where Ms. Swapna discussed both the strengths and limitations of the technology. She also addressed the admissibility of BEOS in Indian courts and supplemented her lecture with case studies that demonstrated the real-world application of BEOS in criminal investigations, making the session highly practical and relatable for the participants.

The session not only enhanced the participants' understanding of neurocognitive profiling but also shed light on the advancements and challenges associated with the BEOS technique in forensic science. Altogether there were 8 students and the session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Aparna S Shetty, second-year MSc CFS student.
