On October 24, 2024, from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., a group session on optimism was facilitated by ten II M.Sc. counselling students for 15 participants from the II BA Criminology department of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya. The session focused on fostering an understanding of optimism and exploring practical ways to incorporate it into everyday life.
The session centered around interactive exercises designed to highlight the value of optimism, featuring activities such as the “Optimism Spin,” “Optimism Chair,” and “Pessimism Chair.” These exercises underscored the numerous benefits of adopting an optimistic mindset, including improved health, higher levels of achievement, greater emotional resilience, reduced stress, persistence, and even increased longevity. Some practical techniques and strategies were also introduced for cultivating optimism, including visualizing their “Best Possible Self,” recognizing and interrupting pessimistic thoughts, and challenging negative beliefs. Additionally, they were encouraged to develop a more positive outlook by practicing methods like shifting attention away from negative thoughts and disputing pessimistic thinking patterns.
The session concluded with a brief summary of the key concepts discussed, followed by an open feedback session. Participants expressed that they found the techniques useful and shared their intention to apply them in their personal lives. The facilitators successfully created an engaging and informative space, equipping the participants with valuable tools to foster optimism in their daily routines.
