On the day One of the workshop at Peyton Institute for Families, Bangalore, MSc Counselling students from the first and second years gathered on 02.12.2024 for an enlightening session on the foundation of family therapy by Fr. Royal Nazareth.
The session began at 11:35 AM with a brief orientation about the venue, followed by an activity on the topic “Foundations of the Family.” It included an introduction, the definition and characteristics of Indian families, and the types and functions of families. Additionally, the session covered the stages of the family life cycle. Fr. Royal Nazareth elaborated on the phases and stages of the family life cycle. The morning session concluded at 12:30 PM.
The afternoon session commenced at 2:00 PM after the lunch break. Fr. Royal Nazareth focused on the implications of the family life cycle for family therapy. A “sentence completion activity” on family strengths encouraged learners to share their insights with the group. He also motivated the participants to apply concepts related to practical, emotional, and relational challenges to their lives. A live demonstration was conducted, allowing students to practice through role play. The afternoon session concluded at 4:00 PM, followed by an interactive Q&A session.
By the end of the workshop, the learners had acquired essential skills for family therapy. The demonstration session enhanced their understanding of attending and observation skills. The concluding Q&A session provided reflective insights into family dynamics.
