The Family Cosmos Forum organized an informative workshop on Psychosocial Interventions for Schizophrenia for 2nd year MPSW scholars on 24th August at 10.00am. The resource person for the session was Mrs. Swapna Shetty, Faculty, MV Shetty College Mangaluru, and an alumni from 2005 MSW batch. Mrs.Shetty has an experience, of working as a counselor for BOSCH and currently providing part time counseling services to MRPL employees too.

The session began with a welcome by Ms Ronika Lohith Shetty, a 2nd year MPSW scholar, and Ms Lenisha Reema Pinto, 2nd year MPSW, presented her a rose.

Mrs. Swapna Shetty began her session by explaining the meaning of schizophrenia, where ‘schizo’ means ‘split’ and ‘phrenia’ means ‘mind’.

The session covered various aspects, including: Definition and understanding of schizophrenia, effects of schizophrenia on individuals, etiology and vulnerability factors, the 4 A’s of schizophrenia, delusions, positive and negative symptoms, thought and speech disorders, disorders of perception, diagnosis and clinical types of schizophrenia, management strategies of schizophrenia, the role of social workers in supporting individuals with schizophrenia.

Added to this Ms Shetty highlighted the psychosocial interventions for schizophrenia including a variety of therapies and programs that aim to improve functioning and well-being, and reduce negative symptoms to name a few Social skills training that helps to improve social interactions and performance in the real world.

Cognitive behavioral therapy: A type of psychotherapy that is a promising approach to helping patients achieve better outcomes.
Cognitive remediation: A type of psychotherapy that is a promising approach to helping patients achieve better outcomes.
Family psycho education: A type of psychosocial intervention that can be beneficial for patients with schizophrenia.
Assertive community treatment (ACT): A psychosocial intervention approach.
Mindfulness interventions: A promising psychosocial intervention for psychosis and schizophrenia.
Peer support: Individual and group peer support is also an important psychosocial intervention for psychosis and schizophrenia.

In addition to psychosocial interventions, other aspects of care for patients with schizophrenia include: Access to crisis counseling, Inpatient psychiatric care, Supervised residential living arrangements, and Case management. Mrs. Shetty’s presentation was comprehensive and detailed, providing valuable insights into the complexities of schizophrenia. The session was well – received by the scholars, who found it highly informative. There were 25 participants for this workshop.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Lenisha Reema Pinto, marking the end of a successful and enlightening session.
