The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized a guest lecture for the second year students of Questioned Documents and Impression Evidences (QDIE) specialization on the topic ‘Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS)' on 21th March 2023 at 1:30pm. The resource person was Mr. Lamees Nasim, Freelance Science Entrance Faculty and also an alumnus of the department.
Mr. Lamees explained about AFIS and its use in crime detection. He expressed that the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) is used by international organizations by joining more than one AFIS in a common server. He briefly spoke about the history of AFIS, the mechanism of working of the AFIS software. He stated that AFIS is widely used by Central Government Organizations, international companies and IT companies. The main disadvantage of AFIS is that the latent fingerprint result is not always relevant and conclusive. Lastly, he discussed the future perspectives of AFIS in various fields. It was an interactive session and the students asked queries regarding the topic which was satisfactorily clarified during the session. Altogether, 14 students were present for the session which concluded at 3pm with a vote of thanks.
