As a part of the curriculum, the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized a day field exposure to Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL), Kuntikana, Mangaluru on 26th May 2023 at 10am for the first year students of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science. The students were accompanied by Mr. Niketh P S, Assistant Professor of the department. The students got an opportunity to visit the various divisions of the Forensic Science Laboratory such as Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Toxicology and Instrumentation.
Dr. Arun Kumar, Scientific officer of the Forensic Toxicology Division gave a brief introduction about the various divisions of the laboratory and the procedure they follow after receiving the case. He showed the viscera and how they are stored for the analysis. He practically demonstrated the preliminary test to detect the presence of alcohol and paraquat herbicide. He also gave the students an insight on the functioning of different instruments in the laboratory.
Dr. Girish, Senior Scientific Officer of the Forensic Chemistry Division explained about various types of explosives, functions of the Forensic Chemistry division and the procedure of analysing the type of explosives. He showed the different types of drugs, the procedure and instruments used to analyse them. Students expressed that the visit was very useful to learn and gain more knowledge through the demonstrations and practical exposure provided during the sessions. Altogether, 18 students and a faculty visited and interacted with the scientific officers of the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory. The visit concluded with a vote of thanks at 5pm.
