As a part of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru and the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Yenepoya Medical College, Yenepoya University (deemed to be), Deralakatte, Mangaluru, two-days exposure in the Field of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology was organized for the first year MSc Criminology and Forensic Science Students on 22nd March 2024 and 23rd March 2024.
Dr. Kishore Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology gave a brief introduction about the department and introduced all the faculties. Later he took a session on Personal Identification. Further, Dr.Vina Vaswani took a session on injuries using pictures. Later, the class was taken by Dr.Shyam Kishore who provided pictional representation of real case of mechanical injuries. The session was continued on 23rd March 2024 by 9.30 am by Dr. Muhammed Nasir Ahmed, Assistant Professor of the department who explained about Forensic Anthropology. Further, practical session was conducted and each student was provided with the set of skeletons and was taught how to identify the human skeletal remains, types of bones such as long bones, short bones, flat bone and irregular bones, determination of age and sex by examining the skeletal remains, skull identification and suture comparison, techniques of recovering the skeletal remains and determining the time since death. Later the doctors gave the students a guided tour of the museum and explained the exhibits present like, Skeletons, poisons, toxins, weapons and the viscera samples.
At the end of the second day there was a common interaction session held in order to answer the queries put forth by students on the session held on the topic of Forensic Anthropology. The students expressed that they could learn the subject matter well through practical exposure and by individually handling the specimens, especially human skeletal remains. Ms. Athira V J, Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Mangaluru, Dr. Vina Vaswani, Dr. Kishore Kumar, Dr. Muhammed Nasir Ahmed and Dr, Shyam Kishore of Yenepoya University (deemed to be) were part of this programme. Ms. Elizabeth Ponnuraj, First year MSc Criminology and Forensic Science delivered vote of thanks and session concluded by 4.30 pm. All together 19 students and 7 faculty members were present.
