The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science in collaboration with Cyber Sapiens, Mangaluru had organized a three days’ workshop on “CYBER FORENSICS: THE ART OF DIGITAL INVESTIGATION” for the First year students of MSc CFS on 18th, 19th & 20th March 2024 in the Cyber Forensic Laboratory of the department. Mr. Chirag Suvarna, Cyber Security Analyst, Cyber Sapiens, Mangaluru and an Alumnus of the Department was the resource person. Dr. Saritha D’souza head of the department, introduced Mr. Chirag as the expert for the day’s cyber forensics session and the purpose of organizing the workshop. The objectives of the workshop are to understand the technicalities of Cyber Forensics, Learn to handle the digital evidence existing in the digital media, to be aware of various types of malwares and its implications and to know the role of Cyber Security analyst. Mr. Niketh P S, Assistant Professor of the Department was also present during the inauguration.
Later Mr. Chirag began with his congenial manner, highlighted the evolving landscape of digital crimes and the pivotal role of cyber forensics in addressing them. He delved into various hacking techniques and the diverse motivations behind cyber-attacks, setting the stage for an insightful discussion on image analysis, email tracing methodologies, and the importance of hash calculators for document integrity verification. In his session he also covered cryptography fundamentals, including encryption methods and the use of public and private keys. He also discussed the generations of mobile communications, the difference between android and IOS, and the concepts of SMS, MMS, CDMA, GSM and Bluetooth. The sessions were conducted both in theory and practical exposure to various software used for the detection of cybercrimes. Later in his practical session, students engaged in hands-on activities such as email tracing exercises, steganography, and utilizing FTK tools for data recovery and analysis. They also explored techniques for recovering deleted data, analyzing file signatures, and cracking passwords. Mr. Chirag concluded the sessions by discussing educational pathways and career opportunities in cyber forensics and cybersecurity, encouraging students to consider these fields for further study.
The interactive nature of the sessions, with enthusiastic student participation and questions, underscored the success of the day’s learning experience. Altogether there were 19 students, and session ended with a vote of thanks by the I MSc student Ms. Elizebeth Ponnura Deepika.
