As a part of the academic curriculum, the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, organized an exposure visit to Inchara Foundation, Mangaluru for the second year students of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science, Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice specialization on 24th March 2025 at 10:00 AM. The visit aimed to provide learner with a deeper understanding of the foundation’s role in supporting victims of abuse and neglect, its operational structure, and the rehabilitation process. A total of eight students and one faculty member participated in the visit.
The session commenced with an informative briefing by Ms. Soujanya, Assistant Program Coordinator, who provided an overview of the history, objectives, and purpose behind the establishment of Inchara Foundation. She explained that the foundation was started to provide a safe and nurturing environment for female children and adolescents who have been victims of abuse, exploitation, and neglect. Ms. Soujanya elaborated on the number of students currently residing at the foundation, which stands at 25, and the number of staff members, totaling 13. She also spoke about the foundation’s multiple branches and its efforts to extend support to a larger group of vulnerable children.
One of the key aspects of the discussion was the detailed explanation of the process followed from the moment a complaint is filed. Ms. Soujanya outlined the steps involved, including the immediate response, legal proceedings, shelter arrangements, education, daily routines, and eventual release upon reaching the age of 18. She emphasized the holistic approach taken by the foundation in ensuring that the children receive not just shelter but also education, counselling, and vocational skills training to prepare them for independent living. Students also gained insight into the daily routines of the inmates, which include structured educational programs, recreational activities, counselling sessions, and vocational training. Ms. Soujanya addressed all the queries raised by the students, offering clarity on various aspects of the foundation’s operations and the challenges faced in rehabilitating victims of abuse.
The exposure visit to Inchara Foundation was an enriching experience that provided students with a practical understanding of the rehabilitation process for victims of abuse. It highlighted the critical role of social organizations in supporting and reintegrating vulnerable individuals into society. The visit reinforced the importance of legal and psychological interventions in victim rehabilitation and deepened students' understanding of child protection mechanisms. The visit concluded at 11:30am with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Fathima Farasath, second year MSc CFS (FPCJ) and compiled the report as well.
