A Launch Program of “World’s Alzheimer’s Month” was organized by PAGE (People’s Association for Geriatric Empowerment) on 2nd September 2024 at Kadri Park Mangaluru. The program began at 8:00 am with over 250 people in attendance, wearing red and white attire to show their support.
Alzheimer’s or Marawu Roga (in Kannada) is a disease that is mostly associated with elderly citizens. The objective of the program was to create awareness among the community members about the disease, to inform them about the various programs organized by medical institutions and other organizations during Sept 2024 and beyond in Mangaluru for the early detection, and identification of suspected patients and medical support provided by them to help patients improve their cognition and manage their symptoms, thereby slowing the progress of the disease. An update was also given on the programs launched last year and success stories were shared.
Dr. Raghuveer, President of PAGE welcomed the esteemed gathering both on and off the dais, which included renowned psychiatric social workers, psychiatric specialists, members of the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Indian Medical Association, Spoorthi Charitable Trust, Mangalore Senior Citizen Association, Faculty and students of Yenepoya college, AJ Medical Hospital, KMC Hospital, Roshni Nilaya and St. Aloysius.
Dr. Prabha Adikari, Vice President of PAGE explained the activities for Alzheimer’s Month. Mr. Jaradine D’souza, Founder, of Mangalore Alzheimer’s Association, delivered the vote of thanks, showing his gratitude towards the doctors who spoke about Alzheimer’s disease, partners who would be conducting various programs and activities throughout the month to fight Alzheimer’s, and public who turned up to support to the cause. The program concluded at 9:30 am with breakfast being served for everyone present and a lively dance performance by Ms. Pratiksha Prabhu and her troop.
