The BSW Department, SAHAYOG Forum, and IQAC of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, organized a four-day orientation programme for the first-year BSW students from July 16, 2024, to July 20, 2024.
The orientation commenced with an inauguration ceremony held in the College Auditorium on July 16, 2024, at 9:30am for the 16 first-year BSW students. The event featured esteemed guests including Dr. Sandra Sunitha Lobo, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Saritha D'Souza, IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Meena Monteiro, Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Mrs. Ramya B, Assistant Professor, MSW Department, Mrs. Veena B.K, HoD, BSW Department, and Assistant Professors Mrs. Anusuya Kamath, Ms. Colin D'Souza, and Mrs. Deepika Sanil.
Ms. Teresa Rose Santosh, a third-year BSW student, served as the Master of Ceremony and introduced the guests to the students. The programme began with a prayer song by Sr. Lilita Toppo, Sr. Aruna, and Ms. Ammu Anna George from the third-year BSW. This was followed by a welcome speech and keynote address delivered by Mrs. Veena B.K.
The lighting of the lamp ceremony was led with all the guests on the dais, joined by a first-year BSW student, Ms. Medhini. Dr. Sandra Lobo then delivered an inspiring talk, motivating the students about their upcoming three-year journey at the college. Following this, Dr. Saritha D'Souza spoke about the significance of Social Work in society and its benefits.
The inauguration concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Gowthami M from the third-year BSW. Subsequently, all students proceeded to the A1 room in the Social Work Block for their workshop on "Learning to Grow."
The session began with an introduction of the session facilitators. Dr. Meena Monteiro was introduced by Ms. Haleema Rafiq Ghaniwala, a final-year BSW student, while Mrs. Ramya B was introduced by Mr. Kevin Crasta, also a final-year BSW student.
The workshop focused on life skills essential for Social Workers in their Fieldwork, with a particular emphasis on Decision-Making and Critical Thinking. Dr. Meena Monteiro elaborated on the importance of Decision-Making skills and their benefits for Social Work practice.
Subsequently, Mrs. Ramya B conducted a session on critical thinking, highlighting its necessity for students during their fieldwork and explaining how to think and act in various situations.An engaging Q&A session followed, where participants provided valuable feedback on the workshop. The session concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Gagana T, a final-year BSW student.
The programme was meticulously organized under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Veena B.K, Head of the BSW Department, with Asst. Prof. Anusuya Kamath, Asst. Prof. Colin D'Souza, and Asst. Prof. Deepika Sanil present.
