Background;
Dr. Ms. Olinda Pereira,(93 years) with her attitude towards teaching profession realised the importance of education and was trying hard to respond to social needs. She Vividly remembers that the close contact with Dr. Francis Yases gave a professional touch to her social service deeds. During Ms. Olinda's tenure, 'Janata Kendra,' a community centre was started at Bolar in Mangalore in 1962. A tailoring class for women was started there to make them self-reliant through self-employment. Along with that, a full day child care centre 'ShishuVihara' was started there for the children of the working women. Next important development is that many alcohol de-addiction camps have been conducted to bring solace to hundreds of affected families at 'Janatha Kendra' under the initiative of one of our alumni, Thomas who has also been instrumental in the establishment of a Non Government Organisation 'Link De-addiction Centre' for alcoholics. Now, in the same premises a well constructed ladies hostel 'Diya Kiran' has been started with support from UGC.
