The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized a session on Serology: Laboratory Examination of Blood for the Crime Detection’ for first year students of MSc CFS held on 10th November 2022 at 10.00 a.m. Ms. Bindiya T, Former Assistant Professor of the department and Trainee, Scene of Crime Officer(SOCO), Government of Karnataka who is also an alumni of the institution was the resource person.
Ms. Bindiya T spoke about Serology- systematic study of blood, its importance as an evidence in the crime scene. She explained about the various blood grouping and chemical tests conducted in the Forensic Science Laboratory. Further, the students were divided into four groups, each group having 4 students. Ms. Bindiya T explained the procedure for ABO blood grouping through a demonstration and students were asked to do the test individually. Thereafter, the session continued with chemical tests to identify blood. She briefly explained about the process of chemical tests, types of chemical tests such as Presumptive tests like Benzidine test, Leucomalachite Green Test, Phenolphthalein Test and Hematoporphyrin Test, followed by the confirmatory tests like Tiechmann and Takayama test. Each group was given with tests to perform and explain about it.
It was a very informative session where it helped the students to gain the knowledge about chemical methods of identifying blood. Altogether, 16 students were present during the session. The session concluded at 4.30pm with a vote of thanks.
