A Capacity Building Workshop was organised for the first year MSW students on ‘Navigating Community Development’ by Dr. Jyothi P S, Assistant Professor, First Grade Government College, Vittal on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Fifty four students were part of this workshop. The goal of the session was to equip the students with the knowledge and understanding of Community Development, its aims and objectives, qualities and skills required for a community developer and what are the field placements and careers opportunities one can pursue.
Through this interactive session students gained insights into the field of social work being a practice based profession, striving to address challenges prevalent in the communities and methods that can be used to enhance the wellbeing of the society and also individuals living within it. Social work and community development specialization being a helping profession based on humanitarian principles requires community developers to have specific skills and qualities which were discussed in detail. Dr. Jyothi encouraged students to leverage the two years of MSW program to enhance skills through observation, learning, training and practice that are required to be an effective community developer. The students gained understanding of the areas in which they can apply the concepts learnt in class through various field placement and the career opportunities they can pursue in Government and Non-Government Sectors and the apt job roles they can opt for after graduation.
Dr. Jyothi concluded her session with parting words of encouragement telling students to be brave to believe and chase their dreams and strive to be a person of value.
